Working group report: Neutrino physics
2009
This is the report of the neutrino physics working group at WHEPP-X. We summarize the problems selected and discussed at the workshop and the papers which have resulted subsequently.
Measuring lung function in asthmatic children: A spirometry and forced oscillation technique (FOT) comparison
2016
Background: Spirometry is the most common pulmonary function test used in asthma diagnosing. However, it requires good patient co-operation. FOT has gained increasing attention for the measurement of pulmonary function in children because it is performed at steady state breathing. Aim: To compare spirometry and FOT in order to discriminate severity of asthma according to GINA. Methods: Spirometry and FOT were performed in 176 out-patient asthmatic children (5-16 year), 100 (57%) with naive Persistent Asthma (PA) and 76 (43%) with Intermittent Asthma (IA), consecutively enrolled at the IBIM pediatric clinic. Two principal component analyses (PCA) were performed, the first (PCA1) based on FEV…
Nonlinear parametric quantile models
2020
Quantile regression is widely used to estimate conditional quantiles of an outcome variable of interest given covariates. This method can estimate one quantile at a time without imposing any constraints on the quantile process other than the linear combination of covariates and parameters specified by the regression model. While this is a flexible modeling tool, it generally yields erratic estimates of conditional quantiles and regression coefficients. Recently, parametric models for the regression coefficients have been proposed that can help balance bias and sampling variability. So far, however, only models that are linear in the parameters and covariates have been explored. This paper …

Asymptotics for third-order nonlinear differential equations: Non-oscillatory and oscillatory cases
2022
We discuss a third-order differential equation, involving a general form of nonlinearity. We obtain results describing how suitable coefficient functions determine the asymptotic and (non-)oscillatory behavior of solutions. We use comparison technique with first-order differential equations together with the Kusano–Naito’s and Philos’ approaches.
Respiratory mechanics measured by forced oscillations during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube
2011
The forced oscillation technique (FOT) allows the measurement of respiratory mechanics in the intensive care setting. The aim of this study was to compare the FOT with a reference method during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube. The respiratory impedance spectra were measured by FOT in nine anaesthetized pigs, and resistance and compliance were estimated on the basis of a linear resistance-compliance inertance model. In comparison, resistance and compliance were quantified by the multiple linear regression analysis (LSF) of conventional ventilator waveforms to the equation of motion. The resistance of the sample was found to range from 6 to 21 cmH(2)O s l(-1) and the compliance…
Optimizing the θ23 octant search in long baseline neutrino experiments
2017
Determination of the θ 23 octant will be an important goal for the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments, as it will show whether the true value of θ 23 lies in the high octant, θ 23 > 45°, or in the low octant, θ 23 < 45°. In this work we investigate the prospects of studying the θ 23 octant in future long baseline neutrino experiments. Using the GLoBES software, we study the sensitivity to θ 23 octant in terms of baseline length and beam sharing and use the LBNO setup as our benchmark. We also show the interference on the octant determination that arises from the unconstrained CP violation angle δ CP. In our results, we show the impact of matter effects on the octant determi…
